A brief introduction to the tibetbook.net list
of Tibetan journals and magazines
1 Periodicals in Tibet
Our list of periodicals was gathered over the period of a couple of
years and is slowly growing. While the major publications are still
issued, some have long since vanished. Therefore some of the mentioned
publications may not be available anymore. Nevertheless, this list is
meant to give an idea of the rich intellectual life on the Tibetan
plateau. If you know of any journal or magazine not mentioned please
let us know (info @ tibetbook.net).
A list of periodical publications as such is probably
already of some interest for scholars of Tibetan culture. Within the
Tibetan areas of the People's Republic magazines and papers are the
main media of contemporary intellectual discourse. Long befor writers
have their books published they send their text to one or many of the
various Tibetan language journals throughout the country. Even though
journals don't pay for contributions, they offer quick publication
and-due to the low price-a great readership. Journals, especially the
smaller ones, may even go unnoticed by the state authorities.
This is basically due to the system of publication and distribution of
printed media which is controlled by state funded organisations. Since
the introduction of computerized typesetting and reprography in recent
years, the production of printed matter has become more easy and
affordable. Especially in the Tibetan regions outside the TAR
monasteries, schools and individuals engage in publishing privately
funded and locally circulated magazines of which some survive for some
time.
2 State-funded periodicals
Magazines and Journals first of all differ according to their
affiliation and funding as well as according to their official status.
2.1 Official periodicals
The oldest, biggest and probably best known journals are the official
and state-funded journals, such as bod kyi rtsom rig sgyu rtsal or
sbrang char. These publications will show a Chinese registration number
and sometimes an ISSN. These magazines and journals are more
specialised on e.g. folk literature, poetry, religion, education, Tibet
studies, etc. or cater to a specific reader e.g. po ta la, aiming at
the educated middle-class reader.
2.2 Internal periodicals
State-funded but intended only for national and restricted distribution
are publications without any registration numbers. These publications
are marked nang khul or internal. The content of internal publications
is usually related to political issues and policies or simply gives
report of the work of certain institutions or offices.
3 Privately funded periodicals
Today the majority of Tibetan periodicals published without
state-support. Some of these publications may or may not show any
registration numbers. Few journals are published with ISBN mostly
acquired from the Hong Kong-based Gyi ling-Publishing House.* Some
publications are published regularly others only if the financial
situation allows.
Most of these journals are affiliated with a monastery, e.g. nyi 'od
with sku 'bum monastery, and published as year books. Since the
majority of contributors are monks, the monastery or some Lamas seem to
like to show by these publications the quality of the monastery's work.
Some journals appear to have been initiated by intellectuals without
affiliation. These journals as well seem to be short-lived and tend to
survive only a few issues. An exception might be the journal klog pa po
of sbrang char-editor Dawa Lodrö or Jangwu's da lta ba.
However, most of the private journals are similar in content. They
feature traditional poetry, free verse poetry, essays and short stories
as well as comments on current issues.
The list gives you the name of the publication followed
by the year of the first publication. The "?" following the year
indicates that the first issue is not at our hands and the date was
estimated or calculated from other copies of the journal/ magazine. You
should be aware that the data provided by existing issues is not always
reliable. We try our best to make our list as accurate as possible.
